Lookin' at You, Watercolor by Hawaii Artist Arlene G. Woo
Visiting the zoo with my little granddaughter has inspired me to paint images of its residents. I was intrigued with the repetitive forms of the tail of the lemur, the bamboo, and the rock formation. This is a quarter sheet (15"x11") of Fabriano that I wet on both sides to create soft edges.

SPREADING HER WINGS ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR PAINTING IN MINIATURE BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ 6X6 SOLD VISIT MY BLOG I thoroughly enjoyed creating this little watercolor painting. The main rose opening with such delicate shades of pink I worked wet into wet with shadows added after she dried. I really had a lot of fun with the supporting buds too, always a challenge to make sure not to overpower the main event. The background I did with rich paint, lifting and dropping in colors. Hope you like her.

Sherwood Forest in Waimanalo, by Arlene G. Woo, an original watercolor
This watercolor was painted after a really windy day on the beach in Waimanalo. There were lots of people camping out with tents. It was fun to capture the colorful abodes among the ironwood trees.
This is a quarter sheet: 10"x14". contact me: Arlene G. Woo

HEADING HOME - ORIGINAL CONTEMPORARY TROPICAL FLORAL WATERCOLOR PAINTING BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ
HEADING HOME ORIGINAL CONTEMPORARY PAINTING BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ WATERCOLOR ON PAPER 22 X 15 VISIT MY BLOG I've been imagining doing this painting for a couple of years. One day while visiting one of Hawaii Island's amazing coastal Botanical Gardens, I came across this grove of Heliconia. The only way to get near them presented a wonderful backlit scene. I finally worked through this group of photos over the holidays and finally decided to attempt painting them in watercolor. The challenge to save my whites and lights was huge because I do not ever use any masking and trying to get the edges of the stalks somewhat neat was really something else. I don't have anything against masking, it just doesn't seem to work for me so I don't have it anymore. In order that I didn't suffer too many frustrations, I worked on Arches 300 lb paper and did the painting in many short sessions over several weeks. Sometimes I would put it away for a few days so I could re-look at it with fresh eyes and try to determine if my original plan was on track. There was so much stuff going on in the background in the original Heliconia Grove I thought is best to leave it out and handle the background in an abstract fashion. I wanted the focus to be on the heliconia themselves and my little friend. If you ever visit the big island of Hawaii and love gardens make a visit to this one part of your itinerary, you won't be disappointed..

BLOOMING ORIGINAL MINIATURE ROSE FLOWER PAINTING IN WATERCOLOR BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ 6 x 6 AVAILABLE VISIT MY ART BLOG Today's miniature watercolor painting is of a sweet rose in the process of blooming. I love the way her center glows with an inner light. I used a few different yellows with a touch of red to get the luminous light. I thought the several leaves offered a supportive backdrop for this gentle rose. Lately the miniatures I've been painting in watercolor are rich enough that they can be framed under glass or plexi but without mats to more resemble the look of oil or acrylic. I'm currently hard at work on some miniature oil paintings, so come back and visit soon.

BABY PLUMERIA ORIGINAL MINIATURE WATERCOLOR PAINTING BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ 6 X 6 AVAILABLE colleensanchez.blogspot.com This small painting is done in watercolor, but with the richness of acrylic or oil. I just seem to really love the richness and living in the tropics, that deepness in hue is strong in the environment. I think it may be soon time to get my oils out to play. First though I need to work on some of the half sheet and full sheet watercolor ideas I have roaming my mind. I used to struggle with ideas sometimes but once I started doing photography and painting often I know I'll never run out of ideas. I just hope I'm around long enough to get some of them on paper or canvas.

Peacock Up Close and Personal, watercolor by Arlene G. Woo
I snapped a photo of the peacock that was strolling by us at the zoo. I love painting the blues of the bird! I had so much fun, I did a series of three. One is on Arlene's Images and I haven't uploaded the third yet. Peacocks are such elegant birds that have a bad rep. Too bad.

MON FAMILE ORIGINAL FLOWER MINIATURE WATERCOLOR PAINTING BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ 5 X 7 FITS STANDARD 8 X 10 MAT/FRAME SOLD colleensanchez.blogspot.com I fell in love with this Hibiscus bush one day at a local park. The back-lit flowers were so striking, the rich color glow just a knockout. I tried to show that glow through less focus on details and more focus on the vibrancy of the light. Sometimes you just need to put down the brushes, stand back and say, yeah, it's done.

Cat Wisdom E-Tegami
Recently I have been enjoying this humble art style, which is popular in Japan. The art is simple, made on 4"x 6" postcards with Gansai paints and ink.
